Thomas D. Sundling , CEO
Prior to joining SMS, Tom was President and Chief Executive Officer of the ITS unit of QinetiQ North America. There he was responsible for developing and implementing business strategy, including customer and employee care. Before joining ITS, Sundling served as Vice President/General Manager of General Dynamics where he was responsible for a $550 million operations unit that supported the intelligence community.
Tom began his career with BDM Corporation in November 1983 where he held engineering program management and leadership positions supporting NASA's Space Telescope Development and intelligence community program. Sundling joined GTE Government Systems in May 1987. From 1987 to 1996, he held positions of increasing responsibility from technical manager, through Program and Operations Manager for an International group to Operations and Engineering Director for the Thousands Oaks Operation. In 1998, he was named Vice President/General Manager Intelligent Systems and has overseen the growth of the organization from $75M to it's current size of $550M. During that time, he also oversaw the organization's ISO 9001 certification and successful SEI CMM level 3 assessment.
Phillip E. Lacombe, President & COO
Prior to joining SMS, Phil was an Executive Vice President with security provider Olive Group where he was a key member of team that obtained acquisition funding as well as led its technology-enabled security practice through a period of dramatic growth in Middle East markets. Before joining Olive Group, he was a Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Integrated Security Solutions Business Unit of SAIC which was a unit he created from the integration of three business units into single integrated security business unit of over $250 million. Phil was also Vice President, of the Secure Mission Solutions line of business at General Dynamics where he managed $300M security and systems business in IC, DoD and civilian agencies.
As a Senior Vice President of Veridian Phil was a key member of corporate team that assembled Veridian by acquisition from Calspan, Veda, MRJ, Trident, Erim, & Signal. Additionally, he was President, Information Technology Information Sharing and Analysis Center; a consortium of IT industry-leading companies working together to share threat, vulnerability and incident data and providing an industry interface to government and Director, President’s Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection where he led the commission staff documenting vulnerability of the nation’s critical infrastructure, providing recommendations to the President and supporting the government’s initial critical infrastructure and nationwide cyber protection actions.
Michael J. McDermott, Executive Vice President & CFO
Prior to joining SMS, Mike was Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Of Universal Systems & Technology, Inc. (UNITECH) where he restructured rate pools, established an internal financial reporting process, solidified banking relations and helped prepare the company for eventual sale in January 2009. Before joining UNITECH he was Vice President and Treasurer at NCI Information Systems Inc., where he was an integral part of the team that successfully completed an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in October 2005. There, his responsibilities included management of corporate accounting, risk management, banking and executive lead on Sarbanes-Oxley compliance activities.
As Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at NLX Corp., Mike supported due diligence and post-acquisition integration activities. His responsibilities included management of accounting and project control, banking, and financial liaison to the equity partners. Prior to NLX, he was Senior Vice President of Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis and Corporate Controller at CACI where he participated on the management team that successfully completed six acquisitions, as well as a Secondary Offering that raised $171 million. He helped manage the implementation of an acquisition tracking process, coordinated with investment bankers and company principals and negotiated and monitored valuation services. His experience also includes preparation of SEC filings, banking relations and credit facility compliance.
Mike has also served as Chief Financial Officer at Lucent Technologies - Government Solutions Division and was Corporate Vice President and Group Controller at SAIC.
Bob Friedenberg, Executive Vice President & CIO
Bob joined Secure Mission Solutions as the EVP of integration and Chief Information Officer responsible for making sure the security services firm's newly acquired businesses continue to perform exceptionally and achieve synergy with the rest of the company resulting in the preeminent provider of integrated security solutions.
For the previous eight years, Bob was CEO of Xeelee Group LLC and personally led many of Xeelee’s engagements working with customers’ mission critical growth strategies, product positioning, operations improvement, and IT infrastructures. Many of his customers were leading Federal services providers including General Dynamics, SAIC, Harris Corporation, ManTech, and Northrop Grumman.
Prior to Xeelee Group, Bob held a variety of executive positions within systems integrators, software companies, and management consultancies where he has designed operations, developed strategies, and implemented systems to obtain value from advanced technologies. Examples include Equient, a Veridian Company, The Thomson Corporation, Coopers & Lybrand, and Inference Corporation where he worked with Fortune 500 companies in the information publishing, financial services, telecom, manufacturing, and retail industries.
He has a Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from Case Western Reserve University and an M.B.A. in Corporate Strategy from New York University.
John L. Hearton, Executive Vice President & CTO
With over 20 years of operational experience, John is a veteran in the development and management of information technology. As a founder of WareOnEarth Communications Inc. (WCI), he initiated a service based enterprise for Information Assurance that became nationally ranked among IA corporations. He serves as Chief Technical Officer for WCI a Secure Mission Solutions Corporation, which provides state-of-the-art Information Assurance (IA) services to Defense supercomputing facilities and other Government programs. John is a representative member of the Joint Engineering Team (JET) and the Hawaiian Intranet Consortium and provides technical advisory support to the Department of Defense (DoD) Research & Development Network for the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense, Department of Defense Research and Engineering and other agencies on leading edge technologies such as MLS, IPv6 and Cloud Computing.
Previously, John was with Allied Signal (now Honeywell), where he was responsible for IA services and the transition of leading edge technologies to the market. John was responsible for managing programs in excess of 150 million dollars and was appointed to Allied Signal’s leadership council. He was also a managing consultant for Vision Technologies and NETSEC Consulting where he was responsible for market research, analysis and prototype development for advanced technologies now being used by EPRI and space applications used by the Department of Defense. As supervisor of computer technical support for Circuit City Stores Corporate Headquarters, John was responsible for managing an 80 Million dollar annual budget and supervising and monitoring technical support and data analysis, the development of a computer acceleration program for peripheral integrations, vendor relations, and maintenance of various database systems on UNIX based HP9000’s.
John holds a Bachelors degree in Economics and Marketing from George Mason University.
Jon B. Dorrick, Executive Vice President Business Development
Prior to joining SMS, Jon was the Senior Vice President for Business Development for the IT Service Group of QinetiQ North America (QNA). In this position he was responsible not only for growing the business, but also in assisting the new QNA organization in developing policies and procedures and in integrating their newly acquired companies. From 1993 to 2005 Jon served varying positions in GTE Government Systems, and then later on in General Dynamics Advanced Inforamtion Systems, as result of the GTE acquisition. His prior positions included: Director, Business Development, GDAIS HQs; Dir of BD, Intelligence and Exploitation Systems Division; Dir of Operations, Intelligence Operations; Advanced Programs Manager and Program Manager of several C4ISR operations in support of US SOUTHCOM, US Atlantic Command (JFCOM) and the Intelligence Community.
After graduating from the University of Miami (FL), Jon served a full career in the Army, the last ten years being in the Washington DC area, at the Pentagon and the Defense Intelligence Agency. There he was involved in many aspects of C4ISR, to include functional management of the DoD Intelligence Information System (DoDIIS) and support of Desert Shield / Desert Storm actions. Jon holds Masters Degrees from American University and Wayne State University. He currently resides in Springfield Virginia, enjoys boating and fishing in the Chesapeake Bay and attempts to play golf.
